Stephen Petronio Company

Stephen Petronio Company
May 21, 10am-12pm

Taught by Stephen Petronio and Amanda Wells, this class focuses on building a rigorous and intelligent movement practice. A warm-up that emphasizes the articulation of the spine, the opening of the joints and the direction and flow of energy throughout the body and into space, is followed by phrases derived from Company repertory that address dynamic sequencing, poly-rhythmic initiations and a sense of fearlessness within a complex architectural form.

May 28, 10am-12pm

A critically acclaimed dancer, choreographer, teacher and the recipient of a Princess Grace Award for Choreography, Camille A. Brown’s work combines elements of all dance styles to examine issues pertaining to the human spirit and its profound, sometimes humorous journey through life. Ms. Brown’s class begins with a warm-up, followed by a rep portion that challenges the dancer’s artistic landscape and approach to the art of dance by discovering new ways to color dynamic movement.

Andrea Miller

Jun 4, 10am-12pm

Taught by Andrea Miller, the class begins with a highly physical warm-up of directed body explorations, emphasizing floor work, the articulation of the torso in relationship to the plumb line, and use of gravity and momentum. Students then move across the floor with exercises and improvisations that focus on modes of traveling, risking, balancing, falling and recovering. The class ends with a combination that encourages students find their own expressiveness and interpretation of the movement. Music styles range from classical to Hip Hop.

Battleworks

Battleworks
Jun 11, 10am-12pm

Robert Battle's class is crafted to give dancers a well-rounded knowledge of modern dance. The class incorporates the principles and techniques of classical modern choreographers such as José Limon, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Lar Lubovitch and David Parsons, not only for a thorough warm-up, but also to connect the dots of our modern dance history as it relates to movement. The class culminates in phrases of Battle's own work that expound upon the classical techniques that inspire him. The goal of this class is to give students the opportunity to dance company repertory and work with a professional choreographer in the rehearsal process.

Family Matinee Series
Attending live dance performances can be habit-forming, so we recommend starting young by inviting children to the adult table. That’s why The Joyce created this series -- family-oriented performances followed by a special opportunity to meet the artists. Join us for the Parsons Dance Family Matinee program on Jan 14.
